Charter Manufacturing Design & Build

Charter Manufacturing Company, Inc. is a family-owned steel and iron production and manufacturing company that was founded in the 1930s. After purchasing a new headquarters location, Facility IT Group was brought in to complete a comprehensive data center assessment of the existing space left by the previous tenants.

Charter ManufacturingThe FIG team expertly and diligently coordinated an in-depth assessment of the space and composed a report describing the state of the room while mapping out multiple options to upgrade with essential recommendations. After deciding that the room was incompatible with Charter's needs, we removed the existing infrastructure and provided a turnkey data center design and build to help facilitate the data center move.

From the assessment to the ongoing maintenance contract on the UPS, Cooling, and Generator, we have helped our client build a dependable and scalable system to ensure years of ongoing reliability.  This is another example of how the team at FIG can help our clients from start to finish.

2016 Survey Results

Throughout 2016, we sent a short survey with each month's newsletter to our subscribers. These questions ranged anywhere from arc flash studies to capacitor replacements, use of PUE, and more. With 2016 now behind us, we compiled some of the data we received into bar graphs. None of our clients names or companies were shared in this process, but the numbers allowed us to have some insight into their views on the data center space and potential ways to help in the future. Take a look at some of the responses we received:

WMTV NBC-15 Design & Build

wmtv 15 madisonDuring the construction of their new facility, we worked with WMTV NBC-15 to define data center critical physical infrastructure parameters based on today’s needs and tomorrows possibilities. Our group functioned as an owners representative to work alongside the engineer and architect to assist in the design of a 1000 sq ft new data center space. This included the power, cooling, distribution, racking, containment, and management components.

In addition to assisting in the final design of the space, we were contracted to furnish all pertinent equipment designed. Furthermore, we acted as the installing contractor for the AC, Distribution, Racking, Containment and Management. The project was a complete turnkey from design to ultimate implementation. The design is one of scalability and high efficiencies utilizing technologies such as a unity power factor scalable UPS and close coupled heat rejection featuring hot aisle containment.

This solution based deliverable (design, product, installation and service) allows customers, such as NBC 15, to focus on daily operations while their critical physical infrastructure is soundly planned and administered through the Midwest’s top data center professional team.

Starting in 2016, we want to give our readers a little more of a view into our world at Facility IT Group. Shawn Bergfalk

shawn and nolaMy name is Shawn and I am the owner of Facility IT Group (FIG). I became a partner at FIG five years ago to assist in growing the data center segment in a telecom centric business. I was given the opportunity to acquire the company and jumped at the chance 3 years ago. We have since grown year over year while adding a plethora of products, services, and great staff to support our wide base of customers.

I grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago where I attended St. Patrick High School. After graduating as a proud Shamrock, I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Like many confused 17 year olds, I entered college with the intent to become a doctor, but left with a degree in business. This led me into corporate America, where me and my gift of gab soon migrated into the world of sales. Although I was successfully immersed in the world of business, a passion still burned in me for the medical profession. While working during the day working with data center customers, I returned to school at night and became a paramedic. A little known fact is that I was actually hired onto the Chicago Fire Department. In one of the hardest decisions in my life, I chose to remain in corporate America and declined following in the footsteps of my grandfather, father, mother, and uncles into the world of public service (lots and lots of firemen and policemen in my family). It was not for a loss though. Much of what I am today came as a result of my training in emergency medicine. I saved lives, I delivered babies, and I learned how to manage the most stressful of situations while working in ambulances and emergency rooms. I overlayed this skill set with my business background and sales experience and set off to be the most customer service oriented data center provider in our market.

Although I absolutely love what I do, the true passion in my life is my family. My beautiful wife of five years gave me the greatest gifts I have ever received. My children Liam, 4, and Nola 2, are the true fire that burns inside me. They are my everything, and I will stop at nothing to give them the world. I spend as much time as possible playing with them and doing anything to see them smile. How can you go wrong with two kids that love watching Star Wars and Willy Wonka as much as their dad does? Pretty sweet.

Besides working all hours of the day and spending time with my family I try enjoy traveling, anything outdoors, working out, listening to music, and volunteering. I have been to 39 of the 50 states and 15 countries abroad. Out of all the beautiful sites we have taken in, I still always end up going to back to my favorite, Hayward, WI. We share a log cabin with my parents on the Chippewa Flowage there. Nothing like a Leine's on a nice summer day casting for musky. Another escape for me is my music. The Flaming Lips, hands down, are one of my favorites bands. I try and remain healthy and frequent the gym as much as possible. Equally I cleanse the soul as often as well. Volunteering was instilled through my family at a very young age. There are so many great organizations out there, and I would encourage everyone to give where they can.

So now that you know everything about me...... Thank you to all the people reading this.  Without you, the above would not be what it is. I take the responsibilities of our business extremely seriously, and would do anything to make your day easier where I can. Thanks again and talk soon.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Brett Veronico and I am a Sales Consultant with Facility IT Group.  I have been with FIG for 8 months now and have never felt more welcomed or at home while at work.  My role has been to help grow sales within our service, physical infrastructure, and telecommunications divisions.  Being relatively new at FIG, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself on a more personal level.

I grew up not too far from our Schaumburg office in Hoffman Estates with my parents, my 2 older sisters, and my younger brother.  As a kid I spent most days playing sports (soccer, basketball, football, and lacrosse to name a few), and hanging out with friends with Sundays reserved for spending time with my family doing what most Italian families do best: eating.  I learned a lot from those days and I believe most of my values stem from that time spent with my family/friends and while on the field or court.  I continued to play lacrosse while attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I received my bachelor’s degree in Finance.  I was also fortunate enough to spend one semester studying abroad in Milan, Italy.  It was a sacrifice leaving everything and everyone from my day to day life behind, but the sights I saw, the experiences I had, and the friends I made will be with me forever.

My lacrosse playing career ended after having my right knee operated on for the 4th time in 7 years (not fun!), but that did open the door to a new passion: coaching.  Since ending my playing days, I have coached for 8 years, 1 at U of I, and 7 at the same high school I attended.  My love of working with people is why I do what I do.  I am able to meet new people and work with them every day while working at FIG and coaching lacrosse.  You can learn a lot from others and I value the relationships I develop as they all help me to continue to grow as an individual.  In fact, the reason I am at FIG today is because of the friendship I have had with Sean Keane for years.  He introduced me to Shawn Bergfalk and the rest, as they say, is history.

Lately, when I’m not at FIG and not coaching, a lot of my time has been spent planning my upcoming wedding with my fiancé Sheena. Sheena and I have been together for over 6 years and live in Bartlett.  We love the simple things in life – cooking, eating, enjoying a beverage or two – but our biggest passion is travel and exploration.  We are currently in the process of planning our honeymoon to Spain where we hope to visit Madrid, Barcelona, and 1-2 other beach towns (any and all suggestions are welcome!)

Working at Facility IT Group has been an absolute blast.  I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be surrounded by on a day to day basis.  I am thankful for my opportunity here and I am excited to be a part of an organization that is rapidly growing the way we are!

Married for nearly 35 years and we have two wonderful daughters, both are married and we have two grandchildren. My wife and I will often reminisce and laugh at how our  adorable grandchildren try to get there way by pulling on their parents heart strings. At times it seems like it's payback so we just sit back and smile.

Memorable notes:

I would like to highlight some memorable moments and experiences in my previous job. I frequently traveled to California for about an eight year period working on facility consolidation and a couple facility buildout projects.

In my travels, I ran into several movie stars at LAX and Mike Ditka in a reservation line in front of me. He turned to me and said "they finally got it right" and walked off, exciting! On 9/11, I was on an early flight to LAX which was uneventful until it seemed to land early. There was an announcement to deplane and leave the airport as soon as possible, odd... Eventually I found out that we landed in Boulder Colorado. Made some phone calls and found out about the horrible attacks. The shock of it all didn't sink in until I started watching the coverage on TV at a hotel I was fortunate to find. On the second day, I was able to secure a car to drive out of state and drove to O'hare none stop the next night.

There was one crazy moment when I was staying at a hotel in Long Beach on the 9th floor over looking the Queen Mary dock area. I went up to my room after a late dinner and a couple beers. As soon as I opened the door, the room started swaying back and forth. The window blinds started clanking against the wall. As I tried to keep my balance, my first thought was, I can't be drunk, then I realized it was an earth quake. It nearly knocked me off my feet during that 5-10 seconds that seemed to go on forever...

Personal note:

I challenge myself by learning and doing new and different things. From hands on experience with remodeling projects or car repairs to improving my golf game. There are a host of things that most of us can't do. But, if there is something outside my skill set, I will research and seek advice to determine the best approach and safe practices to any project.

Education:

Bachelors of Science in Technical Management from DeVry University.

Larry Bergfalk

Larry volunteeringMy name is Larry Bergfalk, and have been associated with Facility IT Group, Inc., since July 2010 as the Chief Operation Officer (COO). My focus with (FIG) has been: to set business strategy, implement policy and direction as a managing executive officer.

Confucius was quoted “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. Throughout my career(s) I have always sought out personnel and associates that exemplified Character, Integrity and Desire. The group assembled at Facility IT Group far exceed these expectations.

Personally, I have a very diverse background with over forty (40) years management experience in both the Private and Public Sectors. Born, raised and reared in the Portage Park area of the City of Chicago, I attended St. Patrick High School, Lewis University and subsequently obtained a graduate degree at DePaul University. Several years ago we relocated near the Illinois/Wisconsin Border and enjoy the best of both worlds; urban and the tranquility of a country lake home.

I have been married for over forty years to a girl from the old neighborhood, who I have known along with her family for over fifty years. We have two wonderful children, who we are so proud of, and three grandkids – Life is good! My wife is retired after twenty-five years in law enforcement and enjoys her well-earned retirement. We have been blessed with health and the ability to travel the past several years taking several trips abroad and vacation during the winter months in Hawaii. Other interests include spending time at our family home in Northern Wisconsin, fishing, golfing, reading, hobbies and watching sports (my days of participation in sports have passed like the hands of time).

My early Chicago years, growing up in a working class neighborhood, instilled a blue collar work ethic coupled with passion to volunteer and give back to all segments of society. I currently volunteer at the USO, Special Olympics, Honor Flight Chicago, and the Fisher House, usually 10-15 hours weekly, depending on season. Some of my fondest memories are that of a coach, mentor, tutor with various youth organizations. One of my favorite quotes; “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child”.

I am humbled and proud to be a part of Facility IT Group.
